Self-Guided Tours

Self-guided tours are always free because you are the guide. We provide all the resources you need online!
  • Our Excelsior Walking Tour brochure takes you all over the city of Excelsior to explore 21 different historic sites. The brochure can be downloaded from our website or you can pick up a printed copy from our blue Walking Tour boxes located near the Excelsior Docks and at the Water Street entrance to our museum at 305 Water Street.

  • The Oak Hill Cemetery Tour highlights Excelsior's 1855 burying ground, including the history of the cemetery and stories of twenty of those who were buried here. Local cemetery information may also be found here. (Oak Hill's terrain is hilly and uneven and most of the sites must be accessed by foot.)

  • The Lake Minnetonka History Tour was created in partnership with the historical societies of Deephaven, Minnetonka, Wayzata, and Westonka as well as the Museum of Lake Minnetonka. This tour takes you around the lake to explore the collective history of the Lake Minnetonka area and is only available online via Google Earth and Google My Maps.
    • The Google Earth version of the tour provides a 3-D "fly over" experience and is a great option for classroom or home use.
    • The Google My Maps version loads quickly on a smart phone or tablet and is linked to driving directions so you can drive or bike around Lake Minnetonka and see the sights in person.
