Do you care deeply about the history of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka area? Help us further our mission and serve your community as a member of the Board of Directors at the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society.
The mission of ELMHS is to preserve, document, and classify the physical history of the Lake Minnetonka area; to provide a means by which everyone can share in the history of the lake area; and to stimulate interest in the cultural heritage of the area.
At least two new directors will be elected to three year terms in September, 2021. Ideal board candidates brings skill sets from accounting, communications, law, or nonprofit management. Board meetings are held ten months out of the year on the second Tuesday of each month at the ELMHS Archives, 261 School Avenue, Excelsior or virtually. The average monthly commitment is 3 - 8 hours (more for officers), depending on individual committee and project workloads. Board members are expected to host at the ELMHS Museum once a month May-September, plan and attend society events throughout the year, serve on committees, and fill other vital roles to ensure the success of the organization.
Board responsibilities include:
Shaping the vision and direction of the Society in order to serve its mission.
Managing the operations and business affairs of the Society .
Establishing and reviewing policies to achieve the objectives of the Society including a collection policy, personnel policy and long-range plan to meet the goals and objectives of the Society.
Oversight of the Society's finances and submitting an annual budget to the Society Membership for approval.
Providing for the custody, housing and disposition of the Society's collection.
Working closely with the Executive Director to set long-term strategies to support the Society's mission.
Board member qualifications include:
Being a member of ELMHS.
A passion for history.
Strong communication skills, strategic thinking, and leadership experience
Experience making decisions in a group setting
Ability to undertake fiduciary responsibility on behalf of ELMHS and its members
The Board Nominating Committee will interview applicants to better assess their interests and qualifications and a slate of candidates will be submitted to the board for approval. The slate of Officers and Directors will be elected by the membership at the Annual Meeting in September 2021.
